Our Mission

The aim of Mother’s Help Makers is simple: to make the lives of new and expectant mothers easier and happier by acknowledging and supporting what they do.

Most pregnant women and new mothers receive some well-meaning offers of help but they can be too general and women are often too polite to follow them up. Many believe they should be able to cope alone or feel guilty about expecting others to care for them; particularly in the UK and US where our culture of independence and self sufficiency can make it hard to access community support, and harder still to ask for help.

It is now widely recognized that a lack of pre and post-natal support is linked to an increasing incidence of exhaustion, depression, low self-esteem, feelings of powerlessness and isolation, even suicide — the UK’s leading cause of maternal death. While it seems that new mothers are expected to ‘go it alone’ much more now, a recent survey confirmed that what they want most is the practical help and time of others.* It’s just not always easy to get it.

Mother’s Help Makers is designed to establish a practical link between those who want to help and those who need it.  By giving a new mother this gift you are encouraging her to expect and enjoy support, in the same way someone might after any other life changing event. It acknowledges the size of the task at hand, and enables clear communication. Mothers can plan help well in advance and schedule exactly when and how the kind offers of friends and family can be used. This means more rest and increased peace of mind, particularly during those first hectic six weeks after the birth.

Mother's Help Makers is for all new or expectant mothers but there are some women I hope it will be especially useful for: those with more than one child, women on bed rest or with pregnancy complications, single mothers, those with pre-existing health conditions or disabilities, women suffering from post-natal or pregnancy depression, breast-feeding mothers, and women who have had a difficult labour or delivery, a premature birth, or caesarean section, all of which can make the first few months particularly challenging.

The mission of Mother’s Help Makers is to make life easier and happier for new mothers and encourage respect for what they do; not just because women deserve it but because motherhood matters so much. Be part of that mission and use this help as it was intended –  to support new mothers and babies through what should be one of the happiest and most fulfilling times of their lives.

Very best wishes and happy mothering!
